The NL East pennant is unreachable for the Mets. I bet you are saying, “Tell me something I don’t know.”
In order to keep the proper perspective, the Mets need to focus on catching one team at a time in the Wild Card standings. Trying to catch up to the division leaders can be a bit daunting and isn’t really practical anyway.
It is a lot like running a marathon when you are a novice runner. The Phillies are the Kenyans in this particular analogy. The Mets are the novice runner. The Phillies/Kenyans are way out of the Mets league, and beyond reach. This doesn’t mean the Mets should quit.
One novice runner strategy is that of Picking Them Up and Putting Them Down. I don’t think it is an official running term, just a strategy that I have personally employed and discussed with others.
In this strategy, the novice runner (Mets) is behind so many other participants that it is overwhelming to think about the people at the front of the pack.
Instead of crying like a little girl and curling up in a fetal position on the course, you shift your focus on the runner ahead of you. You pick up your pace and pass that runner while, in your mind only, talk some sort of trash. Making fun of their lame neon green running shirt or their annoying wheezing are personal favorites of mine.
Basically, you continue this process until you:
- Pass everyone in front of you that hasn’t already finished.
OR
- Physically exhaust yourself and have to be hauled off in an ambulance.
It is critical that you never allow any of the following to pass you once employing this strategy (in the case of this analogy the Brewers, Padres, or Astros).
- Senior Citizens
- A girl. Admittedly, this is a tad bit sexist so I apologize, but it is honest. Any male novice runner knows this to be true so let’s not pretend this thought doesn’t exist.
- Anyone dressed in some sort of costume. Elvis and Superman costumes are particularly popular.
